Resumen
En Pepe Rangi están representados Papa (la Tierra) y Rangi (el Cielo) y sus hijos. Pepé (probablemente se trate de una forma de pronunciación de las vocales) es Papa, quien aparece representada como una mujer que yace sobre la tierra, mientras que Rangi se despliega en forma de arco sobre ella y ocupa el cielo. A la altura de la cabeza de Pepé aparece la luna en creciente y sobre la espalda de Rangi, el sol. Sobre el vientre de Papa se ven sus cinco hijos, tres de los cuales hacen fuerza para romper la unión de sus padres. Según el Maori-Polynesian Comparative Dictionary (1891) de Edward Tregear:
RANGI (myth.), Heaven or Sky, the great father of men. Rangi was not the oldest of the gods; the first conception of existence commencing in the Maori mind, with Darkness or Chaos (Po), being evolved from Negation (Kore). Rangi (Heaven) and Papa (the Earth) lay clinging in a close embrace, so intertwintres ded that the children they had begotten dwelt in darkness in their narrow realm. These children, who afterwards became the great gods of men, resolved to rend their parents apart, and, after taking long counsel together, essayed the task. One only, Tawhiri-matea, the Lord of Winds and Storms, was grieved at the decision, and refused to join in the forcible divorce of Rangi and Papa. Rongo - ma - tane, Tangaroa, Haumia-tiketike, and Tu-mata-uenga all attempted the “rending apart” in vain; but the mighty Tane-mahuta, the Lord of Forests, at length forced Rangi upwards from the breast of his wife, and let in the light of day. Aunque el mito se continúa, Xul elige el momento más dramático de la narración para su pintura, un tema que con una iconografía muy similar aparece en Solar (ca. 1919-1920).
